Couples & family sessions

A Private Interview for Everyone, Before the Session Starts

In couples counseling, the first few minutes often go to whoever talks loudest. MendTogether starts differently: each person talks with the therapist alone first, so the shared session opens with every perspective already understood.

  1. Create a group and invite

Start a couples or family group, choose your therapist, and invite your partner or family members.

  2. Everyone has a private interview

A short, one-on-one conversation of four or five questions: what brings you here, what frustrates you, what a good outcome looks like, and anything you want the therapist to know privately.

  3. The therapist prepares

The session doesn’t open until everyone has finished. The therapist uses what each person shared to understand where they’re coming from, and doesn’t quote anyone’s interview back to the group.

  4. The shared session

Everyone joins the Open Room. The therapist guides the conversation in real time, keeps it balanced, and steps in with observations and exercises.

  5. Summary and next steps

Everyone in the group can read the written summary, and paid plans add a worksheet to work on before next time.

After every session

A Written Summary of Every Session

When a session ends, your therapist writes up what happened. Instead of trying to remember a difficult conversation, you get a clear record everyone in the group can read.

  • Key themes: the patterns that came up, such as a conflict cycle or a topic that keeps getting avoided.
  • Insights: what’s underneath the argument, in plain language.
  • Next steps: specific things to try before you meet again.
  • Full transcript: the whole conversation, saved in your session history.

Between sessions

Session Continuity and Take-Home Worksheets

Real progress happens across sessions, not in one. MendTogether remembers where you left off and gives you something concrete to work on in between.

Your therapist remembers

After each session, the therapist updates a running history for your group and a private profile for each person. The next time you meet, the full intake interview is replaced by a short check-in: how the week went, whether you tried what you agreed to, and what you want to focus on today.

That history also carries into quick chat and text messages, so a check-in on a Wednesday night picks up from your last session instead of starting from zero.

A returning check-in. The therapist opens with what you agreed last time instead of starting over.

A worksheet to take away

On paid plans, every session also comes with a downloadable PDF worksheet written for that session specifically, not a generic handout. Group worksheets include:

  • Session reflection and the key insights that came up.
  • Shared exercises to do together, with suggested timing.
  • Individual reflection prompts each person can work on alone.
  • Communication tools with a short guide to using them in a real conversation.
  • A note from your therapist about what showed growth.

Individual sessions get their own version, with exercises for the week and journaling questions.

Session continuity and worksheets are included on every paid plan

MendTogether Mediation

AI Mediation in Two Modes: Open and Shuttle

Therapy heals the relationship. Mediation settles a specific dispute, such as a custody schedule, divorce terms, property, or a business disagreement. A neutral AI mediator uses interest-based negotiation and reality testing, and each party has a private check-in before the session.

Open mediation diagram: both parties and the mediator in one shared room, all seeing the same messages. One shared room M A B

Open Mediation

Both parties see each other’s messages in real time, like sitting across a table with a mediator. The mediator can still send a private note to one person for reality testing or process guidance.

Best when both sides can talk directly and want a transparent process.

Shuttle mediation diagram: each party in a separate room, with the mediator carrying reframed messages back and forth between them. Room A Room B A B M reframed, with consent

Shuttle Mediation

Each party sees only their own messages and what the mediator chooses to share. The mediator carries reframed information between rooms, strips out hostility, and only passes on what a party has agreed to share.

Best for high-conflict disputes or when direct communication has broken down.
